12 Sweet Fern Plants

(Comptonia peregrina)

Bayberry Family (Myricaceae)

Sweet Ferns are a Deciduous, erect, low, and have many branches.
They grow up to  3 feet tall from long spreading underground stems
(rhizomes) and like to form thick patches or thickets.

The leaves alternate on the stalks and grow up to 2 1/2 inches.  Male
flowers form in slender, dry, scaly catkins clustered near the ends of
the branches.  Female flowers form in small catkins at the ends of short
branches in late April and May.

Sweet Ferns enjoy sandy to gravely or rocky soils and dry areas with
full or partial sun.

Sweet Fern`s sweet fragrance is especially noticeable when the leaves
and young branches are crushed.  Aboriginal peoples used Sweet Ferns as
a toothache remedy, and also for a cure for diarrhoea and skin
irritations such as that caused by poison ivy.  They lined
blueberry-picking  containers with sweet fern and covered the berries
with it so they would not spoil.  A diet drink tea was historically made
from Sweet Fern.

Sweet Fern plants are about 8 inches tall at time of shipping.

Plants are sold without soil and the roots are carefully washed and
wrapped in moist towel.

I always add extra.

All items are shipped express.
